Free Article: Unlock any iPhone
This guide will show you how to unlock any iPhone, from the most common iPhone 7 or 8, right up to the latest iPhone 12.
We will help you get a permanent iPhone unlock from any of the US wireless carriers. There’s no need to jailbreak your iPhone, or use any other hack, when the official method is the simplest way.
Why would you unlock your iPhone?
There are dozens of reasons to unlock an iPhone, but most come down to cold hard cash. Unlocking an iPhone can help you save hundreds of dollars each year because you will be free to switch to a better deal. I said earlier that the iPhone 7 or 8 are the most popular iPhones to unlock. That’s because a friend or family member will get a new iPhone and pass down their existing model. You might receive their iPhone 8 but it’s not on the right carrier. It used to be a real problem, but now it’s so simple. Get an official iPhone unlock and free up the iPhone so that it will take any SIM card.
In this guide we will outline how to unlock an iPhone from the biggest carriers in the US, but it will work with any local carrier.
First day with an iPhone
On day one, your iPhone is normally locked to one carrier, like Verizon or T-Mobile. This means that the iPhone will only work with SIM cards from that carrier. A Verizon customer can’t switch their iPhone to one of the new cheaper carriers to get a better deal. That is, unless they unlock their iPhone.
Typically, when other cell phones are unlocked, you would take it to a local cell phone store and they would unlock it for you. Possibly they would sell you an unlock code that you enter into your own cell phone. Unlocking iPhones is different. Apple maintains a status on their servers. This lets them control which carrier each iPhone will work with. Even if you went to a small cell phone store and they unlocked your iPhone, it was always just a temporary unlock. At some point in time, like when there was a new iPhone software update issues, Apple would lock the phone again to the carrier that it was first shipped with.
The only way to get a permanent unlock of an iPhone is to have the mobile carrier notify Apple that the phone is now released from their carrier network. Small mom & pop stores don’t have the ability to get a mobile carrier to talk to Apple on your behalf. That has to be done by a company that has built up a relationship with them, and has the size to get things done. The great news, though, is that this is a pain-free process for you.

Is it legal to unlock an iPhone?
On August 1, 2014 President Obama signed the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act into law. This gave every American the right to ask for their cellphone to be unlocked. Since that day it has been perfectly legal to unlock an iPhone in the United States.
Why are iPhones locked in the first place?
If you saw the launch of the iPhone 12, you might have noticed that Apple announced one price for people buying the iPhone from them, and a lower price for people buying from Verizon. Most of the other cell carriers have since announced the same discount as Verizon, but that’s not the only thing they have in common. They will all lock the device to their own network, so that people don’t buy the cheaper iPhones and then use them on other carrier networks.
That’s fine for the first customer, but what happens if you want to pass the iPhone onto someone else, or sell it? Why should it still be tied to Verizon or T-Mobile or anyone? Well, I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t need to be and you can get it unlocked from DirectUnlocks today.
What are the different methods for unlocking an iPhone?
First things first. There are a lot of hacks out there when it comes to unlocking an iPhone. Other people might call them scams. There are stores that will “jail-break” your iPhone so it can run on any carrier service. How anybody thinks that the phrase “Jail-Break” can be legit is beyond me. It even sounds wrong. Just avoid any website or store that wants to do that. Likewise, “Gevey Sims”, “RSIM”, “SAM” and “Ultrasn0w” are red flags. Some of them involve changing the electronics in your iPhone! I am not interested in that at all. I am here to show you an official method for permanently unlocking your iPhone. Permanently. You can update your software or use your iPhone however you want, and it will never re-lock itself.
What models of iPhone can I unlock?
One of the good things about using an official method for unlocking iPhones is that it will work with any iPhone purchased in the United States. This includes the iPhone 12, iPhone X, iPhone 8 or even the 5s. Heck, it doesn’t matter how old the iPhone. Even if it was bought before the 2014 change to the law, DirectUnlocks can unlock it.
Is an unlocked iPhone really cheaper?
We’re not here to sell you a new wireless plan. There are plenty of sites out there who can do that. But if you’re paying more than $20 a month for typical usage, then you’re paying too much. New wireless carriers like Mint Mobile can save you hundreds of dollars a year, but you need to have an unlocked iPhone in order to benefit from it.
Know your IMEI.
Before you begin unlocking your iPhone, you will need its IMEI number. This is a unique number that every cellphone has.
There are three ways of getting the IMEI number of your iPhone:
- In the iPhone menu, go to Settings >General >About. The IMEI number should be listed on the screen. Press and hold the number to copy it into the clipboard.
- Go to your iPhone number dialling keypad and type #06# (star-hash-zero-six-hash). The IMEI number will appear on your screen – this method has become less useful recently because on the new iPhone software it’s not possible to highlight & copy the text.
- Connect your iPhone to iTunes on a computer. On the information page, click on the phone number. This tells you several pieces of information about the iPhone, one of which is the IMEI number.
The IMEI number should be 15 digits long. It’s important that you provide the correct IMEI number because that’s the device that will be unlocked. Try it now. Go to settings, copy the IMEI number and then paste it into the box below.

Once you have completed your details on DirectUnlocks, they will inform Apple and your wireless carrier that your device is to be unlocked. You won’t need to enter any code to complete the unlock. Once Apple have updated their list, they will send a signal over the air to unlock your iPhone. If you put a SIM card in from another network, you should see that your iPhone has been unlocked.
What about stores that advertise that the they can unlock iPhones?
Some local stores or cellphone stores claim that they can unlock iPhones. The very best you can hope for is that they will use a company like DirectUnlocks and just add on some cost. In most cases though, they won’t use an official method, and will try to “jail-break” your iPhone. This is not a recommended way to unlock iPhones because it’s not a permanent unlock. Forget that it opens your device up to viruses because it removes the security that iPhone users enjoy. In addition to that, every time Apple releases a new software update the cellphone will be locked again.
The only official way to unlock an iPhone is either through your cellphone network carrier using the methods listed on this page. DirectUnlocks are able to expedite that process. I would definitely recommend that it’s worth paying the small fee to unlock your iPhone officially and legitimately. It’s the only way to ensure that your unlock will be permanent.
Can I unlock my iPhone for free?
It is in the interest of the the wireless networks to keep the current system going. They want iPhones locked to carrier networks, so that people feel obliged to stay as customers. In theory that are supposed to make unlocking procedures available but it’s never easy, and rarely free. Especially if you don’t value your time.
Aside from that, if you have seen a website offering an iPhone unlock for free, especially if they call it an unlock code, then the best advice I can give you is to avoid it. Walk away. Run away. It’s a scam. Most likely they want to get you to install something on your phone, so that they can control it.
