More about Greater London

Greater London is a part of England that includes most of the area known as the London region. This region is made up of 33 local government districts, including 32 boroughs in London and the special area known as the City of London. The Greater London Authority, headquartered in Southwark, manages local government across the region, including the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. Meanwhile, the City of London Corporation takes care of local government in the City of London, similar to the other 32 London borough councils.

The concept of Greater London was first introduced as a unique council area under the Greater London Council between 1963 and 1986. It was officially created as a county on April 1, 1965, through the London Government Act 1963. Later, the area was named a region in 1994, and the Greater London Authority was established in 2000.

Greater London spans 1,572 square kilometers (607 square miles) and was home to 8,174,000 people as of the 2011 census. When looking at national statistics, you might see something called the Greater London Built-up Area, which measures the continuous urban area, including some places that are outside the official region.
